The Preventive Neurology Unit
A newsletter to highlight research and news relevant to the emerging science of preventive neurology and the Preventive Neurology Unit.
Welcome to Preventive Neurology Newsletter. Because Google is scrapping Feedburner and they have not invested in Blogger we have moved the Preventive Neurology Unit blog to this platform, which is cleaner and has additional features that are easier to use.
I have been very fortunate and privileged to be able to start a Preventive Neurology Unit (PNU), in partnership with Professor Jack Cuzick from the Wolfson Institute or Preventive Medicine. The unit has been generously funded and supported by the Barts Charity.
The funding from Barts Charity has enabled us to recruit and form several teams at Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust to develop methods to identify those at high risk of developing a specific neurological condition, and then provide initial data to demonstrate whether simple treatments – such as aspirin for vascular dementia, nicotine patches for Parkinson’s disease, and Epstein-Barr virus vaccination for MS – can delay the onset of disease.
The PNU has a vision of the future where people who are at high risk of developing a neurological disease will be able to take an intervention that will prevent or delay the onset of the disease been targeted.
